Lime plaster on internal walls

Lime has amazing properties for creating healthy indoor environment. It is easy to care for, is antistatic, antifungal and antibacterial. More on those properties can be found here www.uku.eu. As lime started to become a joining theme in the barn conversion using it as wall covering felt like right decision. We had also considered paints (could not decide on colour) and wallpaper, the latter did not match with our vision on keeping it as close to original as possible. At the end of the day it had been a barn for nearly 200 years, turning it into fancy manor house felt just wrong.
With all preparation work complete the plasterer was able to proceed with covering all internal plasterboard walls and upstairs ceilings with lime plaster. This work was all carried out with no intervention from us, it is best to let professionals do their job and leave us with element of surprise for our next holiday. We were not disappointed. Upon arrival in end of July we were greeted with completely transformed building (but still messy at that point). Everything started to come together and the decisions we made felt right.

I had a target to spend our holiday in the house and get it all clean for Terrys birthday at the beginning of August. The first week was spent clearing the house of all leftover thermal plaster, building materials and tools. Clean and wash down every surface. Remove papers that covered floors everywhere. Clean furniture and make the space liveable.

In the afternoon of his birthday he was able to finally see the house like it always had been in my vision - spacious bright and airy.

Although still not complete and we had some way to go it all started to feel like home. The transformation of dark and damp fortress to a cosy and spacious home was finally taking shape. Few more messy jobs were ahead but for that end of summer holiday we could pretend that we are nearly done.
Before leaving for England again we wrapped up the furniture and sectioned the house to prepare for downstairs ceiling corrections. It felt sad to leave again but necessity to make it all work.
